100% Syrah from premium blocks in Hawkes Bay, located on free draining gravel soils especially suited to growing high quality Syrah.
Handpicked grapes were destemmed and tipped directly into a 5 tonne open top vat and given a 3 day cold soak, then allowed to warm up and ferment spontaneously with native vineyard yeasts. To achieve complex characters, a small portion was drained toward the end of fermentation to finish in new French oak barrels. Once dry, the remaining wine was then drawn off the skins and aged for 14 months in French oak barrels. The wine was racked once to blend before returning to barrels for a further 9 months of ageing.
Aromas of dark berry fruit are complimented by secondary characters of black pepper, liquorice and mocha. The palate is complex, with sweet fruit flavours of plum and red berries balanced by savoury game characters and spicy oak. Medium bodied with a balanced acidity giving freshness to the supple and finely grained tannins.
