Verdelho is the dominant white grape of Madeira wines. The characteristics of Verdelho wines vary according to climate, growing conditions and winemaking technique. Usually aromatic and high in alcohol and acidity, the palate can be rich, herbaceous, spicy and nutty with tropical fruit flavors. In Portugal Verdelho is a major component in the famous Madeira wines, whereas in other regions such as New Zealand these grapes are transformed into a dry, fruity style.
