Syrah is gradually carving out a niche for itself in New Zealand’s North Island vineyards where some of the emerging wines have proven to be unexpectedly classy. It typically yields robust, richly flavoured reds with heady aromas and characteristically spicy, black pepper notes. Works very well with hearty dishes such as spaghetti bolognaise, ratatouille or spicy, barbequed meats.
