Esk Valley Pinot Gris 2020
"...vibrant, pear-like flavours, hints of lychees and spices, a touch of barrel-ferment complexity and a dryish, lingering finish." eMichael Cooper
Esk Valley's 2019 Pinot Gris is a lovely dry, full-bodied style from two Hawkes Bay vineyard sites; the Barber and the Keltern vineyards; with gravel based soils, warm daytime temperatures and cool nights, making them ideal sites to grow premium Pinot Gris.
Fruit was picked in the morning while cool and pressed quickly to retain freshness, and was .fermented in a mix of tanks and seasoned oak barriques prior to bottling.
Esk Valley is a high quality Hawke's Bay winery, and with one of New Zealand's most experienced winemakers at the helm, Gordon Russell, (plus developments in the cellar and vineyard), its wines from Hawke's Bay (including the famous Gimblett Gravels) and Marlborough just keep getting better and better. An estate to watch.
"Showing strong personality, this invitingly scented, full-bodied wine has strong, vibrant, pear-like flavours, hints of lychees and spices, a touch of barrel-ferment complexity and a dryish, lingering finish." Michael Cooper
4.5 stars - Michael Cooper
Lovely aromatics and flavours of citrus, stone fruit, honey and pears are evident, with a hint of spice providing complexity. A full-bodied style with just a hint of residual sugar to balance the natural acidity. Barrel fermentation in seasoned barriques provided richness, while 'early picked' sites have provided fresh, natural acidity.
