Felton Road Block 5 Pinot Noir 2016

100% Pinot Noir from Felton Road's Block 5 situated on a gentle north facing slope in the heart of The Elms vineyard, Central Otago.

Fruit was retained as 25% whole clusters with the remainder carefully destemmed directly to fermenters by gravity without harsh pumping. Long pre-fermentation soaks of 7 to 8 days prior to fermentation with indigenous yeasts and punched down by hand up to three times daily with a total time on skins of 21 to 23 days. Pressed off and barrels filled immediately by gravity to the underground barrel cellars. Spent 17 months in 33% new French oak barrels, with two rackings and no fining or filtration before bottling.

Winemaker's Comments

Immediately the pedigree is obvious: loaded with dark fruit and dried herbs, with hints of smoked meat over a complex spice background. The palate leads with a silky  chocolate like sensation that builds and flows to every corner of the mouth. There is a harmony of different textural components that’s enchanting and endlessly enticing. It’s all about finesse, detail and honesty: no more and no less.

"A powerhouse with Grand Cru-like poise, this edition has plenty of charm. Aromas of red cherries, nori, forest wood and herbs, as well as a stony edge. The palate has a smooth surface layer of fine, plush tannins across a deeper inner core and a long serve of fresh, ripe red berry and cherry fruit. A magnificent, long and precise finish. A seamless wine."
